Thought For The Soul
What is Faith?
By John and Cindy Thomas

Christ the Anchor

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen. (Romans 11:1) I started out with this verse because many of us does not understand what faith truly is. Some scoff at those who proclaim it and say they have faith in JESUS CHRIST. Those that scoff say,”how can you believe in a person you cannot see?”

Let us examine believing in the unseen. But first let me give you the dictionary definition of what faith is. According to Webster’s New World College dictionary faith is; “1. Confidence, belief in the Christian religion, to trust, be convinced, to persuade. 1 unquestioning belief that does not require proof or evidence. 2 unquestioning belief in GOD, religious tenets etc.”

I would like to ask some simple questions. When we sit in a chair, how do we know it will not collapse and cause us to fall? When we turn on a light switch, how do we know the lights come on? How do we know their really is electricity? What causes us to be able to think and reason? What holds this universe together when it should fly apart?

There is a simple answer to the preceding questions. We don’t know how. We don’t know why. When we sit in a chair we believe it is going to hold us, turn on a light we believe the light will come on. All though we cannot see electricity running through wires, we believe it is there. And those of us who believe in JESUS CHRIST as our LORD and Saviour believe it is GOD HIMSELF that not only created all things HE holds all things together. That is what faith is all about. We can believe in the impossible but yet many seem not to be able to believe in a living Christ. Faith is a part of our every day life whether we like to admit it or not.

Faith is important because without it we cannot please GOD. And with out it we cannot be saved by the grace of GOD. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of GOD: Not of works lest any man should boast.”

So faith is believing, having hope in something that cannot be seen. In this case it is JESUS CHRIST. You say there is no evidence in this. Just look around you at nature and how, until man intervenes, everything is perfectly balanced. Can you seriously say there is no GOD? The fool has said in his heart there is no GOD.
